Cap'n Joff
I found this letter and photos from 2002 -
fortunately I scanned them in, because I can't now find the originals in
my clever Ben Archive system...
...it records a special episode from Ben's life (I guess between Cape and
Truro College); but it also demonstrates how Ben kept records: it has been
one of my joys, in looking through his papers, notebooks, sketchbooks and
electronic files, discovering handwritten letters from his family and
friends that Ben had carefully kept and preserved. Of course, for
me, letters that I had written him that he took the trouble and care to
keep is very special; I hope that it will be a good feeling for Joff to
see these photos and this letter that Ben also kept.
Thank you Joff: I am sure it was an important part of Ben's growing up to
face the sea in such an elemental way. The trip, as I recall, was
across to France, and then back to Plymouth (due to prevailing winds, a
return ticket to Penzance was not a viable option!). I even got a
bit involved (I think...) joining Joff on the final leg to bring the boat
back around the Lizard some weeks later - just one day under sail, and all
well within sight of land, was probably enough for me!!
