Investigating the relationship between the game Traffic Lights and patterns

[Ed: Jorge Nuno, father of one of Ben's friends at St Julian's between 1994 and 1996, and no doubt part of the inspiration for Ben deciding to take a degree in Maths later in life, kindly sent this paper to me a few days ago...]

Ben, Jorge Nuno sent this on - I think you might find it interesting (as might Dr Ben, Amin, Jared and Joe + possibly the more mathematical of your former colleagues?).

Penrose's Universe

Hi Andrew, Please put this on Ben's interweb. Joza x

My Rambling response to 'Playing Games and Maths'

Have only read the abstract in 'Playing Games and Maths' so far.
Once when walking down the lane in front of Andrew's house I came across the play maths that Ben and Emily had written in coloured chalk for a long way along on the path of the lane itself, so that to my delight I walked along the record of this play maths learning. Look forward to getting a translation and reading the rest of 'Playing Games and Maths'.

Have just discovered the Roger Penrose lectures on the universe, his maths is to me is like an unfamiliar language (in which sometimes I fancy that I have understood a phrase but know thats only an illusion on my part) I love his hand drawn diagrams and his theory of there being one universe that ends and begins over and over again, and also the way that his great maths mind becomes wonderfully human as he losses his place among his slides, keeps pressing the wrong button, grapples with the task of handling the transparent sheets for his over head projector and forgetting where he has put the most important diagram that he wanted to show.

Oh Joza, what a wonderful ramble! I will put it up dreckly, but I just wanted to ask about the Penrose lecture: could you send me the link or tell me what it was called, because I can't find a specific lecture with Penrose getting in a muddle over his slides (which does sound like fun - the eccentric professor finding practicalities too much for himself...)

https://youtu.be/aaIdJMxP6bA Hi Andrew, very happy you like Ramble, link to Penrose using slides, he is unsure of changing slides at the begining, the get into trouble with it a little into talk, and more trouble as talk continues, will look for another where he is using overhead projector. Joza x

https://youtu.be/xlSMME-Cl5g this one with overhead projector - I love his diagrams - about 36 along the time bar shows him looking for the one thing he wanted but he gets into trouble other places, - I really like listening to him, seeing the diagrams, he is wanting so much to share and explain to others.
